Il tycoon messicano delle telecom Carlos Slim Helù ha spodestato dal vertice della classifica degli uomini più ricchi del mondo Bill Gates, fondatore della Microsoft, dopo 13 anni di ininterrotto predominio. La notizia, diffusa in anteprima il mese scorso dalla rivista economica messicana Sentido Comun, è stata confermata anche dal prestigioso magazine americano Fortune. Che stima il patrimonio di Slim in un valore di circa 59 miliardi di dollari, un miliardo in più di quello di Gates.

 

 

 

Slim, 67 anni, è il classico self-made man. Nato povero, è figlio di un libanese cristiano immigrato in Messico. Ascese agli onori delle cronache per la prima volta nel 1990, quando, alla guida di una cordata che contava nelle proprie file, anche France Telecom, comprò dallo Stato Messicano la compagnia telefonica Telmex. Un acquisto azzeccato, visto che i profitti della Telmex gli permisero di dare inizio ad una carriera inarrestabile. Adesso le holding della famiglia Slim hanno il controllo di Telcel e di America Movil. Combinate, le due compagnie controllano circa il 73% del traffico di telefonia mobile dell’America latina.

Ma l’impero di Slim, che secondo Fortune è responsabile di circa il 5% del prodotto nazionale loro del Messico, non si limita alle telecom. Possiede banche e catene di ristoranti. Piantagioni di tabacco e retailers informatici. E nel portafoglio ha perfino il 3% delle azioni della Apple. Solo nell’ultimo anno la sua fortuna è cresciuta di 19 milioni di dollari.

Ma l’aver raggiunto il primo posto nella classifica degli uomini più ricchi del mondo non sembra destare particolari emozioni in Slim. Non mi importa niente – ha risposto agli intervistatori, delusi – essere il primo, il secondo o il ventesimo non ha importanza.
